“Bobrisky: Nigerian Celebrity Arrested for Alleged Naira Abuse”

Bobrisky, seen here in 2016, has more than five million followers on Instagram

Bobrisky, a prominent Nigerian celebrity known as a transgender woman, has been apprehended on accusations of mishandling banknotes.

The individual, whose legal name is Idris Okuneye, reportedly engaged in the act of “spraying” banknotes during a film premiere held in Lagos, as stated by authorities. “Spraying” involves tossing banknotes into the air as a gesture of appreciation, commonly seen at Nigerian weddings and festivities. However, this practice is technically considered an offense as it leads to the notes falling onto the ground, where they risk being trampled upon. While the maximum penalty for this offense is six months of imprisonment, actual prosecutions are infrequent.

The incident allegedly occurred at the premiere of the highly anticipated film “Ajakaju,” produced by actress Eniola Ajao, hosted at the Film One Circle Mall in the upscale Lagos district of Lekki last month. Footage of the event circulated widely on social media platforms, potentially prompting authorities to take action.

Bobrisky, who boasts a significant following of over five million on Instagram, has yet to make any public statements regarding the incident.

Dele Oyewale, spokesperson for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), informed the press that Bobrisky will face legal charges once investigations are completed, though no specific timeframe was provided.

This incident follows a similar case in February, where actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin received a six-month prison sentence for her involvement in spraying and stepping on new naira notes.
